Group A 75th Anniversary Exhibition Opening Reception

Presented by Brew House Arts at Brew House Gallery

Group A, the oldest continuing Guild of the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, continues its 75th Anniversary year with the exhibition “What Deepest Remains?” on view Oct 4 through Nov 2, 2019 at Brew House Gallery, 711 S. 21st Street, Southside.

An Opening Reception will take place on October 4, 2019 from 5:30-8pm. Gallery hours are Thursday 2-7; Friday and Sat 4-7 or by appointment. The title of the exhibition comes from a Walt Whitman poem,"The Wound Dresser":

“What stays with you latest and deepest? Of curious panics, of hard-fought engagements or sieges tremendous what deepest remains?

Artists were asked to take these lines into their own lives: Consider what part of you will not—cannot—die. What remains essential to who you are? Is there a core strength, a wisdom or spirit that even the darkest defeat cannot destroy?

The show is the third of five exhibitions in 2019 celebrating   Group A’s 75th Anniversary year. A major catalog will be published at the end of the year showcasing every work from all five shows and the first formal history of Group A from its founders and early members to its unique contribution to the cultural fabric of Pittsburgh. Watch for the catalog release
event
to be announced in December.

Originally called the Abstract Group, Group A was founded in 1944 by a radical quartet of artists within the nexus of Carnegie Tech: Samuel Rosenberg, Russell Twigs, Balcomb Greene and Robert Lepper. Frustrated by the slow acceptance of abstract art in Pittsburgh, they formed one of the first guilds at the Arts and Crafts Center of Pittsburgh (now Pittsburgh Center for Arts and Media) where they held exhibits, lectures and lively discussions from their headquarters on the 3rd floor. In 1969, the Abstract Group changed its name to Group A, opening membership to the full spectrum of artistic genres.

Today, as an association of 60 member artists, Group A provides exhibition opportunities for its members and invited guests and fosters an active dialogue about contemporary art,  art concepts and the creative life.
