DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh (DOP) encourages the appreciation of Pittsburgh’s architectural design, history, and art through a series of immersive events that educate the general public by sharing the quintessential stories of Pittsburgh’s past, present, and future, while allowing unprecedented access inside iconic buildings across the City’s many culturally eclectic neighborhoods. Bonnie Baxter brought the concept of DOP home with her in 2015 after spending several years working in Chicago, where she had first been inspired by the Open House Chicago event. “Why doesn’t my hometown have something like this?”, she thought to herself. Equipped with stories of Pittsburgh’s rich history in arts and culture alongside its multiple industrial Renaissances, Ms. Baxter hosted the first DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh Annual Event in October of 2016, guided by a greater vision of increasing the economic and social capital of Pittsburgh through experiential learning in the visual arts sector. Since then, DOP has gone on to add bus tours, guided walking tours, specialty events, virtual storytelling, and neighborhood events to its program catalog.
