Triple Double

Triple Double

Presented by City of Asylum @ Alphabet City at City of Asylum @ Alphabet City

“Drummer Tomas Fujiwara works with rhythm as a pliable substance, solid but ever shifting. His style is forward-driving but rarely blunt or aggressive, and never random. He has a way of spreading out the center of a pulse while setting up a rigorous scaffolding of restraint…A conception of the drum set as a full-canvas instrument, almost orchestral in its scope.” — The New York Times

“It’s daring music that leaves no doubt as to the veracity surrounding Fujiwara’s place in the pantheon of left-leaning explorers leading the charge today.” — All About Jazz

Tomas Fujiwara’s Triple Double is an exploratory jazz sextet that features a powerhouse team of forward-thinking musicians: Tomas and Gerald Cleaver on drums, Mary Halvorson and Brandon Seabrook on guitars, and Ralph Alessi and Taylor Ho Bynum on trumpet/cornet. With each instrument doubled, the group operates as two separate trios. These two trios play off of each other, uniting and diverging as together they explore the complex landscape of Fujiwara’s compositions.

Brooklyn-based drummer and composer Tomas Fujiwara is an active player in some of the most exciting music of the current generation, with his bands Tomas Fujiwara & The Hook Up, 7 Poets Trio, and Triple Double; his collaborative duo with cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum; the collective trio Thumbscrew (with Mary Halvorson and Michael Formanek); and a diversity of creative work with Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, Matana Roberts, Joe Morris, Nicole Mitchell, Ben Goldberg, Tomeka Reid, Amir ElSaffar, and Benoit Delbecq.

Triple Double’s eponymous debut on Firehouse 12 Records was included on over 20 Best-of-2017 Lists including NPR, The Village Voice, and All All About Jazz. On March 15, Triple Double will be released on double vinyl, with an additional two previously unreleased bonus tracks.
