Surviving to Thriving

Surviving to Thriving

Presented by Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council at The Big Room at the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council

‘'On the Road to Thriving, Sometimes You Slip” ...... the "No Sh*# Sherlock Art of Selfcare

As artists, you want to thrive, but sometimes surviving is just about all you can do. What do you do when the worst happens? You get laid off the day job? You get sick? You have an elderly parent to care for? Your last art show failed and you have $200 left to pay the bills? Chants, reiki, and spirit guides can help, but you need PRACTICAL tools to get through life' s challenges and get on with your art.

Learn practical tips and tools for self-care, and get going to create your art and life!

How to take care of your emotional life with coping strategies
What to “realistically” expect from friends and family
Resources – organizations that will help with various life crises
Managing the crisis or crises.
Managing your time and energy
Getting through to the other side
Many of these tips and tools were learned from life experiences as I worked through 15 rounds of unemployment (for various reasons – each with its own ways of coping and managing), cancer and no health insurance or job, helping an elderly parent, coping with ageism, trying to keep up with technology, and other life challenges.

There is much in the popular psychology literature about coping strategies while going through life’s challenges. These will be reviewed to the extent that they are valid and apply to working artists and arts professionals. The attendees will participate by talking about their own coping strategies and how they “got to the other side.” Tech, etc.: There will be handouts and links. This will be a talk. No tech needed. Why necessary to do this: Everyone goes through challenges. This talk will give tips and tools to get through them with grace.
