Finding Family: Writing the Adoption Experience

Finding Family: Writing the Adoption Experience

Presented by The Creative Nonfiction Foundation at Creative Nonfiction Foundation

"[Adoption is] like reading a book with the first few pages missing. It’s like arriving after curtain-up.... But the missing part, the missing past, can be an entry as well as an exit, an opening as well as a void. You will just have to make it up as you go along." - Jeanette Winterson

Because adoption is often loaded with secrecy and, in some cases, guilt and shame, breaking silence can feel taboo for adoptees, birth families, and adoptive families.

This daylong workshop is for anyone whose life has been touched by adoption. Using a combination of lectures and writing exercises, Lori Jakiela— author of an award-winning adoption memoir—will help you explore your experiences and forge healing pathways to your own stories and complicated truths.

Award-Winning Authors to Discuss the Adoption Experience

Adoption can be loaded with secrecy and, in some cases, guilt, confusion and shame. Speaking out can sometimes feel taboo for adoptees, birth families, and adoptive families.

Three award-winning writers – Nancy McCabe, Phil Terman, and Lori Jakiela – will come together to break that silence, read from their work and talk about their own experiences as members of the adoption triad during a special event Saturday, August 18 at White Whale Bookstore in Bloomfield. The evening begins at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. A reception and book signing will follow.

The reading coincides with a day-long writing workshop – “Finding Family: Writing the Adoption Experience -- with Lori Jakiela at Creative Nonfiction Foundation, 5119 Coral Street in Pittsburgh, from 10-4:30 p.m., also on August 18.
