An interdisciplinary fitness class that draws on techniques from martial arts, dance, mask, theater and team sports to prepare participants for Carnival
Winner of the US Play Coalition's 2017 Action Grant, Ludovia is an interdisciplinary physical class that synthesizes dance, martial arts, theater, and team sports to train physical, emotional, and social communication. It is rooted in City of Play's philosophy of the Adult Play Cycle, and serves as the fundamental training for everything we do.
Drawing on techniques from Isshinryu Karate, Aikido, Tai-Chi, Capoeira, Jerzy Grotowski, Augusto Boal, Contact Improvisation, Viewpoints, Parade, Soccer, Yoga, Clown, and Mask, Ludovia is a holistic fitness class for carnival participants. As participation grows, class will be divided into introductory and advanced groups.
Meeting every Saturday at 2pm at the Allegheny YMCA, the class begins with a rigorous physical, vocal, social and emotional warm up. The warm up is followed by performance technique. Experienced participants are invited to join for a second hour of street performance training in the public park across the street from 3-4pm.
