Mini-Tonk Party

Mini-Tonk Party

Presented by Children's Museum of Pittsburgh at Children's Museum of Pittsburgh

Today is the day we've all been waiting for... Pittonkatonk!

To ramp up for the big Pittonkatonk party in Oakland, we're going to play outdoor games, paint our faces, and parade around in front of the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh in Buhl Community Park with some of the featured bands:

  • 11:00 am - 11:30 am: Big Blitz, a Pittsburgh based band that was born from the sounds of dance, rock, and jazz improvisation.
  • 11:45 am - 12:15 pm: B-Thunder, a female drums corps based in Toledo, OH.
  • 12:30 pm - 1:00 pm: The Detroit Party Marching Band, an ever-evolving collective of 25 + Detroit area musicians devoted to frenetic revelry, driving jams, and the power of the un- amplified horn blast. Their music celebrates the spirit of street bands: a mobile, parade-ready mix of the Balkans, New Orleans, American Rhythm and Blues.

This program is FREE and open to the public!

This program is weather permitting.

Mini-Tonk is in partnership with Pittonkatonk, a free, outdoor, family-friendly community celebration of all styles of brass music, including Balkan, New Orleans Jazz, Symphonic and street/protest/punk, by local and touring musicians.  Now in its fifth year, Pittonkatonk blurs the lines between music festival and family reunion. It's held at the Schenley Park Vietnam Veterans Pavilion and there's no formal stage, no ticket prices, and no barrier for entry. Bands play in the crowd with little to no amplification, the community creates a potluck table of food donations for refreshment, and folks of all ages can be seen dancing together.
