Inequality and the Possibility of Storytelling

Inequality and the Possibility of Storytelling

Presented by City of Asylum at City of Asylum @ Alphabet City

We live in a world of growing nationalism and breath-taking inequalities. In literary culture this dynamic turns into an attitude that writing from beyond US borders as somehow marginal. What are we missing? And how can it help us see the ailing country all around us? Waves of new writers from Argentina, China, Jamaica and beyond are infusing contemporary letters with a new snap. The fourth issue of the acclaimed literary anthology Freeman’s, The Future of New Writing, celebrates this moment and the opportunity it presents. On Friday November 17th one of its 29 writers, essayist Garnette Cadogan, will join editor John Freeman for a discussion about this charged epoch of US life and the ways storytelling can be part of a new politics of optimism.
