International Jazz Poetry Month 2017

International Jazz Poetry Month 2017

Presented by City of Asylum at City of Asylum @ Alphabet City

City of Asylum's Jazz Poetry Month is a festival featuring concerts by Pittsburgh, national, and international jazz performers.  After playing jazz sets, the musicians collaborate with poets and writers from around the world in spoken word performances, which they have created and rehearsed earlier that day.

What started in 2005 as a one-night outdoor concert on Sampsonia Way is now the largest jazz-poetry festival in the world.

Each of the 9 concerts during Jazz Poetry Month is completely unique, with a different line-up of world-class musicians and poets every night. There are concerts by quartets, trios, duets, and solos. And jazz styles ranging from jazz-funk to minimalist and experimental.

Our annual "Freedom to Write" conversation on September 9 will feature Charlie Hebdo survivor Zineb el Rhazoui. She will speak on issues of freedom of speech and take questions from the audience.
