SPARKLE AND FLOW:  WOMEN, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND SELF IMAGINING ON THE INDIAN OCEAN COAST
N.V. Parekh was an influential portrait photographer whose studio, located along the Indian Ocean coast in Mombasa, Kenya in the 20th-century, attracted clients from East Africa and beyond. Brielmaier’s forthcoming book, I Am Sparkling: N. V. Parekh and His Portrait Studio Clients—Mombasa, Kenya 1940 to 1980 is a documentary of Parekh and his subjects in book form (due out in Spring 2022). It is a discrete examination of a historically significant artist and his distinct clientele; and the temporal, geographical, and cultural milieu in which their collaborations flourished.
Join us on September 15th at 6pm for a lecture where Isolde Brielmaier will discuss her new book, I Am Sparkling: N. V. Parekh and His Portrait Studio Clients—Mombasa, Kenya 1940 to 1980. This talk begins in our present moment of image-making, visual culture and story telling and then extends to a look back upon a rarely accessed photographic archive. It is complemented by extensive interviews with Parekh’s diverse clientele, with a particular focus on women as clients of studio photographers.
