June Edition : Summer Workshop Series - Coping & Creating | A Pandemic Guide For Artists

Presented by Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council at Online/Virtual Space

JUNE
Session 1
Creative Coping Techniques through Art & Movement | Speaker:  Bernie Wilke
The pandemic has challenged us all, the full impacts of which remain to be uncovered. Not to mention the tragic societal stressors that have compounded this unique time, such as racially motivated killings, political infighting, contentious social media posts, and the 2020 election. Join muralist and teaching artist Bernie Wilke to learn how to use visual art and movement for self-awareness to help us process and cope with the impact of personal and shared traumas.
Session 2
Creating Meaning from the Mundane | Speaker:  Desiree Matia
How often have you stared at that pile of clutter on your chair or that stack of old mail on the table? This session focuses on finding beauty in the mundane, treasure from trash, and value in your surroundings.

As a mixed media artist, presenter Desiree Matia uses discarded mementos, greeting cards, receipts, notes, and otherwise "trash" to add a personal connection to her work, while working intuitively and responding to formal connections. Matia will share some of her techniques for using non-traditional materials that you can apply to your own art practice, encouraging close looking and creative re-use. Following a demonstration, attendees will have time to practice and work alongside others in the workshop to complete a piece of art.
