Something’s rapping at The Oaks Theater’s chamber door. Is it just the wind or something more?
In “Poe’s Last Night,” actor David Crawford portrays Edgar Allan Poe in his final dying hours on the streets of Baltimore. Poe desperately faces mysterious assailants both without and within his feverish brain. As he fights his demons, Poe performs several of his signature works, including “Alone,” “The Raven,” and “The Cask of Amontillado.”
Crawford first performed the play at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland, where it was hailed as “storytelling at its very best” (Edinburgh Guide), “superb writing and mesmerizing performance,” (TV Bomb), “brilliant” and “faultlessly delivered” (Albie Media). From there, it was booked into the Rialto Theatre in Brighton, England, and the festival in Irvine, Scotland, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Poe’s schoolboy days there. It has also been performed at several venues in the United States.
Crawford began his career in horror in 1978 with his portrayal of Dr. James Foster in George Romero’s zombie epic Dawn of the Dead. A veteran of the stage, his more than 200 roles include horror writer H.P. Lovecraft in another solo show which he wrote, “Lovecraft’s Monsters.”
