ReelQ: I'm Moshanty. Do You Love Me?

Presented by City of Asylum @ Alphabet City at City of Asylum @ Alphabet City

(Run time: 1 hr 12 minutes)

Papua New Guinea is one of the world’s most dangerous place to be a woman, with 70% reporting that they experienced family and sexual violence before the age of 15. Sorcery killings and domestic abuse take the lives of hundreds of women every year. HIV infection rates are the highest in the Pacific. Because of violence and discrimination, transgender persons are homeless, unemployed, denied education and medical care and living under the greatest possible threat of robbery, rape and murder.

Yet there is one transgender woman who is loved by nearly every person in Papua New Guinea. The iconic recording artist and legendary entertainer Moses Moshanty Tau is a national hero and a beacon to the transgender community of the entire South Pacific. Filmed over a weekend in October of 2017 and including her last live performances, I’m Moshanty. Do You Love Me? is an introduction and a musical tribute to the career of the transgender activist with a mother’s heart, teeth of gold and a voice like a coronet. Hear about her journey from a tiny Motuan village to a mis-gendered public figure at the top of the South Pacific music industry. In her last interview, she shares her personal truth and her greatest desires as a woman with her millions of fans.
