MASHA TATARINTSEVA

Bio:

MASHA TATARINTSEVA  is excited to show her work at the Christine Frechard Gallery.   Masha is a multi disciplinary artist with a background in, fine art, theater and production design.   Her creative practice blends theater, film/animation, and immersion. Masha’ most recent work explores issues of immigrant self identity. Masha was born in Leningrad, USSR and spent her formative years in Pittsburgh PA before moving to Los Angeles to complete her MFA at California Institute of the Arts.

ABOUT the FAMILY TREE Installation:

Masha Tatarintseva’s immersive installation, titled FAMILY TREE, connects soundscape by composer Julian Valdi-vieso, lighting scape programing by Jesse Baldridge and twenty backlit LED photo boxes.

Masha Tatarintseva tries to sort out her immigrant JEWISH and RUSSIAN roots.  She decided to re-mount this installation following its 2016 original viewing at Automata art space ( LA) because following election scandals and horrific murders at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Sq Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA a community in which Masha grew up and lived for more than 20 years she realized that being Russian and Jewish is just as unpredictable as it has been for her parents and great grandparents generations.

In her own words: “When I came home to Pittsburgh, PA, for a visit in the summer of 2015 a big stack of old photos was all that was left after my parents returned from my grandmother’s funeral in St Petersburg, Russia.  I looked through the old photos where I only knew about 20% of the people, mainly, my grandparents. I realized that the family of people who came before me are total strangers to me, yet I look like them and possibly have their mannerisms and personality.  This installation is my attempt to reconnect with these people whom I never met and never will meet, yet who’s culture and ethnicity has shaped how the world views me.

VICTOR GRAUER

Dr. Victor Grauer, based in Pittsburgh, PA,  is a composer, musicologist, film maker, media artist, installation artist, poet and dramatist.   His creative work in various media has been presented at The New York Film Festival, the Albright Knox Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh, The Kitchen (New York), The Mattress Factory (Pittsburgh), The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, the Cincinnati Center for Contemporary Art, the Barbicon Center, and the Whitney Museum, among many others.  Films of his are in the permanent collections of Carnegie Institute, the University of Pittsburgh and the Anthology Archives, New York. Four of his short films were screened as part of the American Century retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2000. His writings on musicology and the arts have been published in journals such as Ethnomusicology, Semiotica, Art Criticism, Music Theory Online, Other Voices,  Millennium Film Journal and The World of Music. In 1998 he received the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's Creative Achievement Award. Grauerhas taught at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, the Pittsburgh High School of the Creative and Performing Arts and Chatham College.

Artist's statement:

Ever since the mid-1960's I've been deeply involved with film and video as means of poetic expression and visual exploration. My contribution to the Frechard Gallery exhibition combines a display of two such works with a series of inkjet prints based on still images drawn from both. The earlier is a 16mm, hand-painted, film titled "Webs and Stems" (recently digitized). The other, titled "Screen," is a computer-generated video display featuring slow full-screen color modulations. Since both works contain individual images and color fields that appealed to me, I recently decided to extract some of the most interesting and attractive frames to display as visual art-works in their own right. Visitors to the Frechard Gallery will be able to view both works in their original, time-based, format, accompanied by a set of color prints drawn from them. Both films and prints will be available for sale in signed, limited edition format.*
