The Syrinx Project by Zoe Sorrell, Theo Chandler, and John Burnett at Pittsburgh Fringe

Presented by Pittsburgh Fringe Festival at Boom Concepts

The Syrinx Project is a series of commissions for solo flute that expose the ability of the arts to interact with the sociopolitical atmosphere in which art is created. Each new commission centers on a different female from mythology and tells her story through the lens of contemporary feminism. The project will continue to gather commissions until it is no longer physically possible for the project to be performed from Part I through to the end.

About the Performer:
Zoe Sorrell is a creative and accomplished flutist and entrepreneur based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is the artistic director of the Pittsburgh-based contemporary music ensemble, NAT 28, a role that has allowed her to shape the new music scene throughout the city of Pittsburgh. She often performs with local ensembles such as Chatham Baroque, the Eclectic Laboratory Chamber Orchestra (ELCO), the Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh, and the Erie Chamber Orchestra. As a soloist and chamber musician, Sorrell declared her arrival on the scene by winning both the Keynotes Scholarship Competition and the Pittsburgh Concert Society Major Artist Competition in her first year. She was a featured performer in the Pittsburgh Festival of New Music 2016 and can be found programmed on house concerts, salons, and pop-up performances throughout the year. Sorrell is trained in language and dance and frequently combines these disciplines with her musical performances. Her multidisciplinary commissioning series, The Syrinx Project, has been described as “a modern classic [that] brings audiences to the art in a way that is fresh and relevant” (Melissa Snoza, Fifth House Ensemble). Sorrell also plays Baroque and Renaissance flutes, and her historical ensembles have performed around the United States at such events as the Kennedy Center’s Conservatory Project and the Boston Early Music Festival. As an educator, Sorrell maintains an active studio of flute, piano, and entrepreneurship students. In 2013, she served on the faculty of the nationally-acclaimed Sitka Fine Arts Camp in Alaska. She is currently the flute professor at Westminster College and teaches piano and flute at the Winchester-Thurston School.

Sorrell holds Bachelor’s degrees in flute performance and English literature from Oberlin College and Conservatory and a Master’s degree in flute performance from Carnegie Mellon University.
