Join us for a concert featuring the powerhouse jazz talents of Eric DeFade, Paul Thompson and Thomas Wendt playing the music from Sonny Rollins’ classic album, Way Out West.
Sonny Rollins’ 1957 album Way Out West introduced the technique he called “strolling”, in which he would solo over only bass and drums, without a pianist (the pianist is on a permanent “stroll”). This intimate, pared-down ensemble format would become a Rollins signature, and a new go-to ensemble format for jazz groups to follow.
In a tribute to the heyday of mid-century jazz, Eric DeFade, Paul Thompson and Thomas Wendt will put a distinctly contemporary spin on this innovative jazz classic. This trio of Pittsburgh musicians will channel the flawlessly integrated improvisational chemistry of Sonny Rollins into a thoroughly modern performance.
The Off Minor Jazz Series highlights the music of legendary jazz composers and players. The series has been curated by drummer Thomas Wendt, who puts together the right musicians for each concert.
