THE ARTISTS’ VISION
Using color, texture, and tension, Casey Sommers and Angela Briggs explore the dichotomy between abstract chaos and conceptual structure. Their work does not reference objective reality – rather, each piece captures the artists’ shared experience of a moment in time. Perfect lines and heavy texture communicate a state of mind – joy, sadness, fear, and love visually unfold as the artists internalize the memory.
Abandoning the brush in favor of unconventional tools, and without sketching or planning, they begin each piece with an unlimited palette of nonfigurative marks. They achieve layering and depth by intuitively combining a variety of media onto a shared surface. Spontaneously feeding off of each other’s movements, emotions, and playfulness – and without any set parameters – Angela and Casey’s works evolve over time into sublime visual and tactile environments.
YES YOU CAN TOUCH THE ART! WE ARE ADVOCATES OF INTIMACY BETWEEN OUR WORK AND ITS AUDIENCE.
Because of the textural nature of our work, we warmly encourage attendees of our solo exhibitions to touch the art. We believe that this contact enriches your experience and allows for a deeper internalization of the body of work. We truly hope you enjoy the opportunity to connect with our pieces at a closer level.
Casey Sommers and Angela Briggs were both born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where the art duo’s studio is located today.
