OUTLINE OF THE WORKSHOP
9:00am – 10:00am: Introductions
– Three (3) teaching Artists – introductions
– Visiting teachers’ introductions
– Q&A re: experience with teaching Shakespeare (if any)
10:00am – 11:00am: Movement
– Light movement to understand iambic pentameter and the differences of verse and prose
– Speaking Shakespeare
11:00am – 12:00pm: Song & Dance
– An Elizabethan round or two and some dances from the time period
12:00pm – 12:30pm: WORKING LUNCH
1:00pm – 2:00pm: Partner Work
– Finding the meaning to a soliquy
– Instruction/choosing scenes from Twelfth Night
2:00pm – 3:00pm: Rehearsing and Presenting Twelfth Night Scenes
3:00pm – 4:00pm: Application in the classroom and End of Day Evaluation of Workshop

Information about the presenters:
Andy Kirtland is the Co-founder and Artistic Director of Pittsburgh’s New Renaissance Theatre Company. Having studied classical theatre at the British American Drama Academy, Andy has acted with Pittsburgh Public Theatre, The Playhouse REP, Unseam’d Shakespeare Company, Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks, Prime Stage, Unrehearsed Shakespeare Project, Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre, the New England Shakespeare Festival, and the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.
Elena Alexandratos is an actress and educator of Theater Arts with an emphasis in the classics. Having studied Shakespeare at the University of Pittsburgh, she has the privilege of working with F. Murray Abraham, Lisa Harrow and the Royal Shakespeare Teaching Artists on bringing the works of Shakespeare to life by incorporating historical and modern acting and teaching techniques to understand his poetry. Her approach is direct, fun and engaging for teachers and students.
Linda Haston is a director, performer and teaching Artist. She has directed and performed with various major Pittsburgh theatre companies. She also is a teaching artist in the educational system in Pittsburgh. Her background includes a BFA and MFA in theatre. Currently she is the Education Director for Prime Stage Theatre, which includes her overseeing the Teacher’s Advisory Committee, the Literacy in ACTion, Champion of Life Building and Global Learning Program.
