Artist and curator Fran Flaherty, will present on her project, The Anthropology of Motherhood, along with co-curator and art historian Dr. Amy Bowman-McElhon and Pittsburgh artist Maria Mangano.
Flaherty and Bowman-McElhon will guide us through the “Anthropology of Motherhood: Culture of Care” exhibition at Carlow College, a show which transforms the mundane objects of caregiving into valuable art pieces such as paintings, sculpture, and mixed media pieces. Pittsburgh artist and mother Maria Mangano will also join the conversation and talk about navigating both art making and motherhood during COVID.
Following their presentation, the artists will engage with the audience to discuss the culture of care, the valuation or devaluation of caregiving in our society, and the fact that it is overwhelmingly women who provide care. Participants will be encouraged to talk about their own relationships between caregiving, motherhood, and art making.
