Making Time, Making Art: Navigating the Writer/Author Divide

In literary circles, we often discuss the “writer’s life” – nurturing a strong writing habit, how to approach revision, building a literary community – but there’s much less discussion of the “author’s life” – the new and frequently time-consuming activities needed after a writer goes public with their work and nurtures their writing in the world.

In this presentation, Julie Marie Wade shares first-hand experiences navigating the writer/author divide and strategies to balance creative work with literary business. We will explore the writing process, pursuit of publication, and the new responsibilities that arise post-publication. We’ll also consider how we can integrate these two aspects of a literary life. Beyond publishing as “happily ever after,” we’ll explore ways to realize your dream of publishing *and* sustain happiness in your new, inevitably busier life as an author.

ABOUT YOUR PRESENTER

JULIE MARIE WADE is a member of the creative writing faculty at Florida International University in Miami. A winner of the Marie Alexander Poetry Series and the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Memoir, she is the author of many collections of poetry and prose, including two collaborative essay collections written with Denise Duhamel and Brenda Miller. Wade’s newest projects are Fugue: An Aural History (Diagram New Michigan Press, 2023) and Otherwise: Essays (Autumn House Press, 2023), selected by Lia Purpura for the 2022 Autumn House Press Nonfiction Book Prize.
