Grist From The Mill: 1902

“1902” is the first installment of the “Grist From The Mill” series, a trilogy of works inspired by murder ballads and dark folklore. In these storytelling pieces written, directed and performed by Lissa Brennan, the steel mills of Pennsylvania not only serve as setting, but play an integral part in the action, an essential element in the narrative.

“1902” debuted in January of 2020, presented by Dog & Pony Show Theatricals at Carnegie Stage. Pittsburgh Playwrights Artistic Director Mark Clayton Southers was in attendance, and when Covid restrictions changed his company’s season to an online one, felt the work would translate successfully to a recorded format. Brennan and Director of Photography P.J. Gaynard took to the streets of Pittsburgh and locations in which the story takes place: mooring cells and sunken barges off the Monongahela River; city steps winding through the South Side; muddy trails through forested parks. Through the generosity of partners Rivers Of Steel, they were able to access Carrie Blast Furnaces Historical Landmark, showcasing the looming structure that endures as part of Pittsburgh’s physical landscape.

Opening weekend of “Grist From The Mill: 1902” will feature an interactive pre-show discussion at 5 pm on January 31st. A Facebook Live watch party follows at 6 pm. For the next four weeks, through February 28th, the production can be viewed at any time, at no cost, through the theatre’s website.
