Frick Park Map Orienteering

“Orienteering” is a international recreational activity and sport in which participants look for checkpoints (in the form of small flags) using only a topographic map and a compass.

A paper map is basically a 2-dimensional model and representation of a 3-dimensional world, and its design tries to summarize the features of a 3-dimensional world on to a 2-dimensional medium.

Participants identify and recognize features around them and see them represented on the map and thus feel “oriented”.  Finding the checkpoint is a bit like a treasure hunt.

Organized by the Western Pennsylvania Orienteering Club.

Cost of the map is $6.  Group or family can share the map if they wish.  Registration and start is anytime between 10:45 AM and 2 PM.  Event closes at 3:30 PM.  Volunteers are on site to provide basic instruction.  Compasses are available for loan (no fee).
