Crash Course: Monet and His Circle - Morning

When a group of radical painters displayed their works at the Nadar photographic studio in 1874, they were criticized for their new style and the seemingly unfinished quality of their work. Newspaper critics dubbed them “Impressionists,” and their work continues to elicit public and scholarly fascination.

Discover how artists, including Monet, Degas, and Renoir, railed against academic tradition to become truly revolutionary, ushering in a new era of visual art. Touch on the impact of the artists who preceded and followed this movement including Manet, Van Gogh, and Matisse. This class is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Monet and the Modern City, opening May 25, 2019.

Admission is for all three classes, May 8, 15, and 22 from 10:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m.

About the Instructor

Kylie Seltzer is a PhD candidate in the History of Art and Architecture Department at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research examines the intersection of race theory and architecture through human displays in late 19th-century Paris. In 2017, Seltzer was awarded the department’s Graduate Student Excellence in Teaching Award and has served as the Teaching Assistant Mentor for the past two years. Winner of the Graham Foundation’s Carter Manny Award in 2018, she is excited to pursue a career as a professor upon completing her dissertation.
