Sharif Bey: Dialogues in Clay and Glass

Sharif Bey: Dialogues in Clay and Glass

Presented by Pittsburgh Glass Center at Pittsburgh Glass Center

Sharif Bey’s work cross-references notions of power, ornamentation, and natural history with objects and surfaces associated with traditional African jewelry. He uses his work to explore alternative ways of paying respect to tradition, function, adornment, and ceremony. His exhibition showcases his large-scale ceramic necklace wall hangings and a series of necklace forms made from large glass beads. Bey said, “I look forward to exploring the different relationship with light that the glass beads will have in contrast to the ceramic beads.” In addition, the expanded color palette in glass opens up possibilities in his work not currently available in ceramic glazes.

This exhibition coincides with the 2018 National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Conference in Pittsburgh taking place March 14-17 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Get more details at  http://nceca.net/
