 “Blackness like poetry means many things,” Terrance Hayes said at the National Book Awards in 2016, when Cave Canem won the NBA’s Literian Award. Founded in 1996 by poets Toi Derricotte and Cornelius Eady to “remedy the under-representation and isolation of African American poets in the literary landscape,” Cave Canem has grown to become one of the most influential poetry organizations in the world.
